My teaching experience

School Teaching

I have been teaching for nearly 30 years, including at top-ranking schools such as Charterhouse in Surrey (pictured above) and Phillips Exeter Academy in the USA (pictured at the bottom of this page) where I worked with Dan Brown, author of The Da Vinci Code (who taught English there) and where I claim I taught Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook (he was a student there at that time, but I don’t actually remember him!)

Private Tuition

I started working full-time as a private tutor in 2006. Since then I have taught over 13,000 hours to over 400 students, helping them achieve the grades they needed to get into their first choice university.

I have worked with local schools in Harrogate, for example giving mock interviews to Oxbridge candidates and running revision classes at St Aidan’s School. I was a governor at Fulford School in York, where I set up and ran the Maths Club.

Mathematics Teaching

I have taught almost every component of ‘A’ level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, as well as ‘A’ level Statistics, and GCSE Mathematics and Statistics. I have taught all four of the English mathematics specifications: AQA, Edexcel, MEI and OCR. I have also taught the Pre-U and the IB, as well as AP Calculus AB and BC, and AP Statistics, when I worked in the USA.

PhysicS TEACHING

I teach all aspects of A level and GCSE Physics.

Oxbridge Teaching

I have successfully prepared Cambridge candidates for the STEP exams (Papers I, II and III) and Oxford candidates for the MAT and PAT exams.

Undergraduate teaching

I have been an Associate Lecturer for the Open University and I have also taught undergraduates studying Mathematics (and courses with mathematical content, such as Economics) from a variety of universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, as well as York, Sheffield, Nottingham and Liverpool.

EXAMINING

I have been an examiner for each of the three English exam boards. This has given me invaluable experience that has helped me give the very best exam preparation and advice to my students.
